The Cenozoic formations with Cretaceous flints in the Chalonnais and Mâconnais hills (Saône-et-Loire): review of past field investigations and future research opportunities

Since the mid-19th century, the flint formations located at the western edge of the Bressan basin in southern Burgundy, sometimes improperly grouped together under the term "clays-with-flints", raise various questions as to their origin and age. Moreover, the potential of these formations for knapping raw material is still poorly known and is often underestimated by occasional samples collected from the present ground surface. This article reviews the work carried out on Cenozoic formations containing Cretaceous flints in the Chalonnais and Mâconnais regions. Systematic surveys undertaken in the early 2000s, in the perspective of building a lithotheca, illustrate the stratigraphic complexity of the distribution of these formations as well as the genetic and gitological variability of the exploitable materials. Obtaining complementary stratigraphic sections, particularly in the alterites located at the base of the sequence, characterizing the observed geographical facies and studying their exploitation during Prehistory are the next steps of geoarchaeological research on these formations.
